G-Braves drop Game 1 of doubleheader

LAWRENCEVILLE — In the first game of the final two games of the regular season, the G-Braves fell in quick fashion 1-0 to Pawtucket. Gwinnett managed just four hits over the seven innings against Red Sox starter Billy Buckner.

The win gives Pawtucket a 2-game lead in the International League Wild Card race over Lehigh Valley

Luis Durango had two of those hits in a perfect 2-for-2 game, Brian Friday was 1-for-2 and Jose Yepez was 1-for-3. Lyle Overbay walked twice in three at-bats, but never advanced past first base.

Pawtucket forced across it's winning run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Hazelbaker after the Red Sox put runners on the corners with one out. The inning ended on a double by Ivan DeJesus when Jon Hee was caught off third base and eventually tagged out by shortstop Jack Wilson after a five-person rundown.

Gwinnett put the first two runners in the sixth with singles by Friday and Durango and loaded the bases with two outs when Overbay walked for the International League's rookie of the year Ernesto Mejia. But Mejia couldn't come up with RBI No. 93, grounding out softly to third base to end the threat and the last G-Braves hope of the shortened game.
