North Gwinnett kicker Michael D'Angola won voting this week as the Daily Post's first Fans Choice Player of the Week.
D'Angola got 43 percent of the vote to win a tough competition with Greater Atlanta Christian's Kyle Scales (36 percent). Brookwood's Jamaal Cole (17 percent) and Grayson's Ryan Carter (4 percent) also were up for the honor this week.
Each week during the football season, the Daily Post will nominate four players for its Fans Choice Player of the Week. Online voting at www.gwinnettprepsports.com will begin Monday mornings and will end Thursdays at noon. The winner will be featured online and in the Friday print edition.
D'Angola earned the award for his clutch play in the Georgia Dome last weekend. His 33-yard field goal as time expired lifted North to a thrilling, 16-14 win over Colquitt County in the Corky Kell Classic.
"Michael took our daily clock-running, no-time-out, last-second-field goal rehearsal and executed it like a veteran in the live setting," North head coach Bob Sphire said. "Of course, he knows it takes the proper snap, hold and protection to effectively execute the kick, but his confidence in his teammates and in his own ability were evident as he stroked the kick with poise.
"He has worked hard the last two years to be ready for those types of situations, and his focus each day as we have rehearsed the very scenario that played out Saturday paid dividends. I would think that is every high school kicker's dream, whether it is in the dome or against an unsung opponent."
