Based on the 1973 album by The Who, this 1979 film from director Franc Roddam is the British equivalent of "West Side Story." Jimmy (Phil Daniels) is a directionless member of the Mod gang, the mortal enemies of the rougher, leather-clad Rockers. Fueled by drugs, booze, a non-existent work ethic and a crush on a beautiful girl (Leslie Ash) way out of his league, Jimmy also suffers from a multiple personality disorder that eventually drives a wedge between him and everyone he knows. Notable also for the first screen performance from Sting, "Quadrophenia" is one of the finest films ever made dealing with disaffection and the confusion of young adulthood.
