NORCROSS — A tractor-trailer leaking industrial-grade soap shut down lanes of an Interstate 85 off-ramp for several hours Thursday.
A northbound driver on I-85 called police about 12:30 p.m. to report that a liquid was leaking onto his car from a tanker. Both vehicles pulled over on the northbound ramp to Jimmy Carter Boulevard, which police, Fire Department and Hazmat units shut down to assess the situation.
Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said all lanes of the ramp were reopened by about 4 p.m.
Less than 30 gallons of the flammable soap spilled from the truck, leaking from a cap on the tanker. The truck was traveling from Illinois to Statham when the incident occurred, Rutledge said.
The product was described as industrial soap, with its main ingredient being Naptha, a flammable substance.
“As a precaution, paramedics have evaluated the (responding police) officer and two civilians from the passenger car who were exposed to the product,” Rutledge said Thursday afternoon.
Firefighters turned the scene over to a clean-up company.
