ATLANTA (AP) -- Travelers hitting the road for the last weekend of summer should be in for a smoother ride on Georgia highways.
The state Department of Transportation said Tuesday it plans to suspend all lane-closures related to construction work during the Labor Day holiday weekend starting Friday at noon and lasting until 5 a.m. next Tuesday.
DOT officials say Georgia travelers still need to be cautious. The state has averaged nearly 2,000 wrecks and 15 traffic deaths over the three-day Labor Day weekend in recent years.
The DOT says emergency maintenance work and closures because of traffic accidents may still occur.
