BUFORD -- A bus accidentally left in neutral rolled down the hill from a Buford daycare center Wednesday morning, plowing over a stop sign and a tree before crashing into a house.
According to a Gwinnett County police report, the driver of the bus attempted to start the vehicle in the parking lot of Scott Street's Children's Learning Center at about 7:45 a.m. Wednesday. He reportedly discovered it was out of gas and "believed he had the parking brake on and went back into the business."
The driver was incorrect.
The empty bus reportedly careened out of the inclined parking lot, crossed Scott Street and struck a stop sign. It continued and crossed East Park Street, went into an embankment and struck a tree. It finally came to a rest after crashing into the rear corner of a house on Garnett Street, police said.
No injuries were reported, but officials determined the home to be unsafe due to the structural damage sustained.
"Upon inspecting the vehicle," the responding officer wrote, "I observed the transmission was in neutral and the parking brake was not engaged."
The driver was issued a citation for "parking brake required."
