On heels of controversy, Emory welcomes freshmen

ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta's Emory University has welcomed 1,371 new students to Emory College. Another 470 have begun orientation at Oxford College, a two-year Emory program focused on liberal arts.

The class of 2016 arrives in the wake of controversy. Emory recently disclosed that some administrators fudged data for several previous classes to boost the university's standings in college rankings. Among the misrepresentations, Emory said it reported average SAT and ACT scores of all admitted students, rather than the average of those who actually enrolled.

The school did not included academic data in announcing the new Emory College class. The Oxford group, meanwhile, comes in with an average high school GPA of 3.79. The middle half of the class had ACT scores ranging from 26 to 30, out of a possible 36.
