Ga. base hosting Marines, sailors in Isaac's path

ALBANY -- Thousands of U.S. Marines and sailors in the path of Isaac are taking shelter at a southwest Georgia military base as the storm approaches the Gulf Coast.

Authorities say buses carrying Marines and sailors from Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida arrived late Monday at Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany to escape the storm's threat.

Base spokesman 1st Lt. Kyle Thomas tells The Albany Herald that 4,000 to 4,800 personnel were expected to be evacuated to the Albany military installation. Officials said the Marines and sailors are being housed in warehouses equipped with cots, and showers have been set up in tents outside the warehouse.

Forecasters predict that Isaac could flood the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida with storm surge and heavy rains.
