Council introduces new community development director

PEACHTREE CORNERS -- With more than 15 years of experience in city planning, Diana Wheeler was officially introduced as Peachtree Corners' first community development director during Tuesday's city council meeting.

Wheeler, who is the city's first employee, comes to the city from Alpharetta, where she helped develop it into the city it is today.

"Her track record in Alpharetta is what set her apart from everyone else," said Mayor Mike Mason. "She has impressive accomplishments. She took Alpharetta, which was a city of 15,000 when she took over and helped bring in NorthPointe Mall, among other things. She has a great vision for our community."

Mason said when other cities found out Wheeler was hired by Peachtree Corners, he got nothing but praise for the move.

"She has a great reputation in the development community," he said. "She'll take us to where we want to go."

The city council also went through a brief procurement training with Suwanee city manager Marty Allen.

Allen highlighted a few areas, mainly how to go about requests for proposals and requests for qualifications.

"The main thing you want to do is verify the quality of their previous work and their credentials," Allen said. "You want to put them on notice of what you're looking for and that there is a minimum threshold you want them to meet."

The one message Allen wanted to get across to the council was that members should never personally do business with the city.

"You're an elected official and it doesn't look good if you personally do business with the city," he said.

Was the relocation expense required in this case or is it now a SURPLUS budget line item?
