LAWRENCEVILLE -- A recount will be held Tuesday, in the close GOP runoff contest between Tommy Hunter and Commissioner Mike Beaudreau.
Beaudreau, who lost the race by 57 votes last week, officially asked for the recount Monday, after the results were certified.
County spokesman Joe Sorenson said the electronic and absentee ballots would be tabulated beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday and would likely take several hours.
On July 31, Beaudreau came in first in the four-man District 3 commission race but did not garner the majority needed to stave off a runoff.
He once again missed the majority at the Aug. 21 runoff, losing 4,580 to 4,523 to Hunter, a former county staffer from Buford.
“It’s so close. I had dozens of supporters and people involved in the campaign ask me to,” Beaudreau said. “I think it’s the right thing to do to make sure every vote is counted properly.”
The commissioner said he spoke to Elections Director Lynn Ledford prior to making a decision, making sure that the recount would not be “overly burdensome” on county staff.
With no Democrat challenger, the recount will decide who wins the upcoming term.
