LAWRENCEVILLE -- Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology has been named a finalist in the first STEM education awards, sponsored by the Technology Association of Georgia and the TAG Education Collaborative.

The award aims to recognize and celebrate schools, extracurricular programs, public-private partnerships, science agencies and post-secondary education outreach programs for supporting and promoting science, technology, engineering, and math education in Georgia. GSMST was named a finalist in the high school category for inspiring interest in STEM and incorporating the advancement of STEM education with curriculum and community partnerships. Winners will be announced on Sept. 14 at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center.

"We applaud each of this year's finalists for their extraordinary efforts to bolster awareness about the importance of STEM and for their hard work to increase student participation in science, technology, engineering and math programs," said Michael Robertson, director of TAG-Ed.

"Georgia will need to fill some 211,000 STEM-related jobs by 2018, so we are pleased to showcase so many great schools, programs and organizations that are helping to develop a strong future workforce for our state. "

Frilot is media specialist of the year

SUWANEE -- Collins Hill High media specialist Holly Frilot has been selected as the District Library Media Specialist of the Year for the metro district. She is now one of seven district winners eligible for selection as the state Library Media Specialist of the Year. GLMA (Georgia Library Media Association) and GAIT (Georgia Association of Instructional Technology) co-sponsor the Georgia School Library Media Specialist of the Year award, recognizing K-12 library media specialists whose services have resulted in exemplary library media programs. The state Library Media Specialist of the Year is selected from among the seven district winners.Restaurants award back-to-school gift cardsLAWRENCEVILLE -- Buffalos Cafe, Dos Copas and Diggers Grill and Tap recently gave several lucky customers a $75 school supply gift card. Customers who dined in with their children were asked to drop their check in a drop box for a drawing on Aug. 1.

Those who won were Tina Peeler, a Buffalos Cafe at Hamilton Mill customer; Felicia Harvest, a Diggers Grill and Tap, Suwanee customer; and Stacey Gross, a Dos Copas customer.
