Brooks to take over Lasseter's term

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Jace Brooks will get an early start in the District 1 commission slot.

Brooks was the only qualifier this week for the special election set for Nov. 6 to replace Shirley Lasseter.

Less than a month ago, the former Suwanee councilman won the GOP nomination for the next full term, which begins in January, and he doesn't face an opponent in the November general election. Now he also does not face an opponent for the special election.

It wasn't immediately clear when Brooks could take office -- if he can take the oath of office soon or has to wait until November. But he said he was looking forward to being sworn in.

Lasseter resigned May 31, the day she pleaded guilty to a federal bribery charge.

"I am thankful and very humbled by the confidence the voters have showed in me. I am looking forward to serving the citizens of this great county," Brooks said. "Unfortunately, District 1 has been without representation on the county commission for the past 3 months. I qualified (Thursday) for the special election so that I can begin serving the citizens of District 1 as soon as possible."

District 1 along with some of the other districts have been without representation for a very long time. I hope you prove to be for the citizens of Gwinnett tCounty.

I congratulate the winner.

But since a vote is still to be taken with an admitted VERY, VERY slim chance of a write in candidate emerging, they may wish to just hold off.

Here’s to the hope we all get to move into the future now with NO more repeats of our recent past.
