NORCROSS -- Every triathlon consists of three components -- swimming, biking and running. Sound like a lot of hard work? Well, it is, but on Sunday, the Strong Kids Program of the YMCA hosts the Atlanta Kids Triathlon at West Gwinnett Park & Aquatic Center in Norcross.
"Triathlon is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world and kids triathlons are a vital part of this trend," said the event's website. "There is no better way for any child to experience the benefits of a healthy lifestyle focused on daily exercise and good nutrition."
Competitors are broken into two groups: juniors, ages 6 to 10 and seniors, ages 11 to 15. Juniors swim four 25-yard laps, bike three miles and run a half of a mile while seniors swim eight 25-yard laps, bike six miles and run for one mile.
Races start at different times for four separate age groups.
When in the race, participants will enter the pool one at a time, transition into the bike portion and exit onto a run course. To keep accurate times, computerized timing chips are used to track each participant throughout each part of the race.
Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each age group, boys and girls, which are given out during a ceremony immediately following the race.
All participants need to kick up their race packets on Saturday. Packets won't be available on race day.
