ATLANTA (AP) -- A task force is recommending that colleges and universities in Atlanta work with police to pay more attention to areas bordering their campuses.
Its top recommendation: More surveillance cameras to focus on areas "in the immediate vicinity" of campuses.
Areas surrounding campuses can be fertile territory for criminals.
Officials say crime bordering the Georgia Tech campus has risen since 2008. Police at the Georgia Institute of Technology say many of the "safety alerts" issued to students are about crimes off-campus.
The task force, formed last month, was convened by Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell and includes local college and university presidents and police chiefs.
