AP releases prep football preseason poll

With the official start of Georgia’s high school football season just days away, Grayson will start the 2012 campaign just where it ended 2011 — on top of the Associated Press’ state rankings.

The Rams were a unanimous choice as the preseason No. 1 team in the newly created Class AAAAAA in the season’s first poll, released by the AP on Tuesday afternoon.

Grayson, which won the Class AAAAA state championship following a 15-0 season last year, received all 10 first-place votes to stand atop the rankings, well above No. 2 Walton, the team the Rams beat in last year’s title game. Colquitt County, Camden County and Lassiter round out the top five.

Grayson is also one of five Gwinnett teams appearing in the initial rankings, including one of three in Georgia’s highest classification.

Joining the Rams in Class AAAAAA are Norcross at No. 6 and Brookwood at No. 8.

Grayson, Brookwood, Walton, Colquitt County and Camden County are all scheduled to open their respective seasons Saturday at the Georgia Dome in the 2012 Corky Kell Classic.

Among the smaller classifications, Buford and Greater Atlanta Christian are the other Gwinnett teams to start the season ranked in the top 10.

Buford, last year’s runner-up in Class AA and state champions in the classification the previous four seasons, will start the season at No. 2 after moving up to Class AAA.

The Wolves (14-1 last season) received four first-place votes and 92 total points in the initial poll, ranking them behind only defending Class AAA state runner-up Peach County.

GAC (8-2 last season), meanwhile, starts the season ranked No. 9 in Class AA.

Other Gwinnett teams receiving votes in their respective classifications, but not quite making the top 10, include Peachtree Ridge, North Gwinnett and Dacula in Class AAAAAA, and Wesleyan in Class AA.

Who is colquitt opening the season with, oh yeah that's right NORTH GWINNETT. Preseason rankings are less valuable than toilet paper. Sphire knows his team is good and so does Propst. Nobody else knows it though. Propst has repeatedly stated that he is more worried about this years north Gwinnett team than last years. Those two guys are genius coaches so they have to know something that the rest of AAAAAA doesnt. Watch NG beat colquitt and then win their 4th region title. Sphire doesn't care about the press or rankIngs this year. That's bad news for everyone on their schedule this season.
