Volunteers sought for Fort Yargo spruce-up

WINDER -- Fort Yargo State Park is seeking volunteers who aren't shy about working up a sweat.

The Winder park is staging a volunteer workday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, in conjunction with the National Environmental Education Foundation's National Public Lands Day.

The goal is to help improve Fort Yargo's mountain biking and hiking trails.

Required: work gloves, drinking water, long pants and sturdy footwear.

Prohibited: flip-flops and their open-toed cousins.

Organizers include Get Outdoors Georgia, outdoor retailer REI, Georgia State Parks, Friends of Georgia State Parks and the Yargo Area Biking Association (YABA).

The park's website advises participants to: "Bring a change of clothes for after the project along with your mountain bike or boat to enjoy the trails and lake."

Snacks and refreshments will be available during the project, which is sponsored by Friends of Georgia State Parks.

The 1,800-acre Fort Yargo State Park, located near downtown Winder at 210 S. Broad St., offers a 260-acre lake, cottages and other amenities, such as a disc golf course.

Volunteers are asked to register online with REI prior to the event by visiting the webpage of the nearest store. For more information, call Fort Yargo State Park at 404-656-6533.
