SUWANEE -- An idea that began in the spring has materialized into a festival organizers hope attracts 1,500 people.
The Collins Hill High School Band Booster Association will host a Community Fun Day on Saturday at Corner Field at Collins Hill Road and Taylor Road that will have inflatables, climbing walls, family games, live music, carnival foods and craft vendors. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the event. It's the first of its kind in what organizers hope is an annual event.
"By mid-June there was a committee of over 15 volunteer parents that had come together to make this event go off," said Rick Selph, a parent volunteer. "Since that time the volunteer parents have put in hundreds of man-hours."
One main attraction is "The Xcelerator," which organizers boast is the "world's largest water slide" at 180 feet long and 40 feet tall.
The live music will consist of the Collins Hill Marching Band Percussion Ensemble, the Creekland Middle School Band Percussion Ensemble and the Collins Hill color guard and cheerleaders.
Other familiar festival staples like tug of war, sack races and three-legged races will be on hand. There will also be martial arts and gymnastics demonstrations.
Military, police, fire and rescue personnel will also attend the event, put on a K-9 demonstration, and have a helicopter on site.
"They will be offering demonstrations, vehicle tours, chances to try on some gear and an opportunity to see it all up close and personal," Selph said.
Attendees can also bring a non-perishable food item for the Lawrenceville Co-Op and receive a free cotton candy or popcorn.
