Mildred Proffitt Hix, age 81 of Duluth, died August 14, 2012. Mrs. Hix was born in Columbia, VA and lived there until she left to attend Mary Washington College in Frederecksburg, VA where she was a 1952 graduate. She had a passion for music, which was her major, and she won the music award at Mary Washington three consecutive years. Mrs. Hix was not only a talented pianist but had also taught elementary school music as well as English prior to having her family. While raising her three daughters, Mrs. Hix taught pre-school for a number of years in Birmingham, Al. and Richmond, Va. She loved children and provided a very special influence in the lives she touched. Mrs. Hix had a special talent for creativity in the development of activities for children and once said her ideal job would be planning children’s birthday parties. Mrs. Hix cherished time with her husband, children and grandchildren and looked especially forward to the annual family vacation to Hilton Head Island over the last 30 years. Mrs. Hix is survived by her husband of 57 years Harwood “Woody” Hix , daughters Gwen Hix of Vinings and Susan Hix Corby, son-in-law Richard Corby, grandchildren Amanda and Adam Corby of Roswell, sisters Mary Ellen Myers of West End, NC and Jane Ayers of Hampstead, MD, brother Thomas Proffitt Jr. of Kinston, NC. She was preceded in death by a daughter Julia Hix. A visitation and memorial service will be held at Bill Head Funeral Homes and Crematory Duluth Chapel, 3088 Duluth Hwy 120, Duluth, Ga. 30096.
