NORCROSS -- A Norcross man tasked with baby-sitting his girlfriend's daughter instead wound up in jail for allegedly leaving the 3-year-old alone in an apartment.
Leron Byrd Dixon, 30, is charged with reckless conduct in the incident last week at Valencia Apartments near Norcross.
A maintenance worker with an order to fix a broken toilet in the apartment discovered the girl alone about 10 p.m. Wednesday, locked the door and notified leasing office staff, who called police.
When an officer knocked, the girl invited him in the apartment to watch cartoons. She said both of her parents were at work, according to a police report.
Police contacted the girl's mother at the Target retailer where she works and ordered her to come home. Meanwhile, Dixon returned to the apartment, claiming he'd been gone no longer than five minutes, the report states.
"He immediately started to lie to me," the officer wrote. "I advised him I'd been with the girl for over 30 minutes."
Police inspected the apartment and found it to be clean and safe enough for a child. The girl was left in her mother's custody as Dixon was arrested. The mother ensured police the child had never been left home alone before.
En route to jail, Dixon asked why he was being charged, when his girlfriend "should have known that he was not a good baby sitter and shouldn't be left alone with her kid," the report states.
Jackson was released from the Gwinnett County Jail on $1,300 bond the day of his arrest.
