North Gwinnett Blaze takes fifth at Nationals
The North Gwinnett Blaze placed fifth Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) 12-U Fastpitch National Championship on Aug. 7 in Moline, Ill.
The tournament featured 83 teams from 20 different states. In addition to the Blaze, five teams from Georgia finished in the top 10.
The Blaze, which play out of George Pierce Park, went 5-2 in tournament play. They two loses were to California teams, including the eventual national champion. The Blaze outscored their opponents 49-25 in the tourney.
Team members are coach Chris Wilbur, Erin Wilbur, Lexi Young, Haley Short, coach Chris Short, Emily Harris, Sarah Beam, Allison Roach, Addison Cameron, coach Travis Martin, Jameson Kavel, Bailey Martin, Gabby Teran, Madolyn Packer and Lauren Prescott.
SOFTBALL
Angels finish season with state championship
The 8U Angels, who play out of the Shiloh Athletic Association, won the ASA Class C state championship on July 14.
The Angels defeated the Twin Creek Twisters to clinch the title. The title capped an impressive season, which included the South Gwinnett Summer Classic championship, the Pre-Tri County championship and the Tri County Championship.
Team members are Lauryn Peppers, Kennedy Broughton, Aaliyah Smith, Brianna Cox, Kiriah Lovett, Kelsie Walker, Awtum Lewis, Imani Washington, Tahjanee Phillips, Lidia Quero and Shamya Young.
SOCCER
AFU win Score College Showcase
The Atlanta Fire United 16U won the 14th annual Score College Showcase in Greensboro, N.C.
AFU defeated teams from Long Island, N.Y., Florida, Maryland and Ottawa, Canda to claim the title.
Goals were scored by Andrew Palmer, Sujay Kalathoor, David Roel, Chris Schuetz and Josh Hoeft. The defensive effort was anchored by goalkeeper Max Smith.
GOLF
Local team captures Mid-Atlantic region championship
The Atlanta All-Star Team won the Junior League Golf Mid-Atlantic Region Championship on Aug. 5.
The team will move on to play for the National Championship Sept. 14-16 at Cog Hill in Chicago.
The All-Star team won the Mid-Atlantic region with a combine score of 33-3 over teams from Indianapolis, Raleigh and Myrtle Beach.
Team members are Luka Karaulic, Jordan Rodriquez, Alex Markham, Jacob Bayer, Cameron Stokes, and Grace Choi from The Hamilton Mill regular season team and James Walton from Sugarloaf.
