SPCA to put on 'Pound Dog' event

SUWANEE -- Sideburns and sequenced outfits should be a popular combination on Saturday when the Georgia SPCA puts on its largest fundraiser of the year.

The Suwanee organization that rescues and adopts pets will have its third annual "You Ain't Nothing But A Pound Dog" event that raises money for the shelter and adoption center. The event, which begins at 6 p.m. at the Gwinnett Center, will have an Elvis impersonator and Las Vegas-theme prizes.

"It is a wonderful way for people to help Georgia's homeless animals while having lots of fun at the same time," said Suwanee resident SPCA executive director Jane Stewart. "It is a very light-hearted night in what can be a very heavy-hearted business."

The cost is $77 per person, which includes a buffet and a chance to win a three-day stay at The Flamingo or Harrah's along with airfare for two to Las Vegas. A $15 discount on tickets is given after a donation of five gallons of bleach, or 20 pounds of scoopable cat litter that's brought to the shelter.

The last day to buy tickets is Tuesday. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Last year, more than 300 people attended, which raised nearly $30,000, said event co-chair Jane Lumbatis.

"That sounds like a lot, but our operating expenses are very high," said Lumbatis, a Sugar Hill resident who is a Georgia SPCA board member. "We have a lot of animals coming in that need medical attention or special training, so (the costs) add up fast."

The event will also have a silent auction, with prizes that include a suite to watch the Atlanta Braves, Park Hopper passes to Disney World and golf packages.

Holly Firfer of CNN is the guest host and there will also be an appearance by Pam Johnson-Bennett, the star of Discovery Channel's "Psycho Kitty" and a world-renowned cat behavior expert.
