LAWRENCEVILLE -- The quick action of a local teen waiter saved the life of a choking woman, leaders said last week as they congratulated the man for his actions.
Commissioners hailed Conlan Casal for using his lifeguard training, when the woman Ileana McCaigue began choking.
Casal successfully performed the Heimlich manuever May 23 at the California Dreaming restaurant in Duluth.
"We are so proud of you," Chairwoman Charlotte Nash said when handing a resolution of recognition to Casal. "Thank you for your bravery and quick thinking.
McCaigue met her savior for the first time during the ceremony.
"Thank you is not enough," McCaigue said, adding that she is often the one rendering aid in her work as a therapist with Gwinnett County Public Schools but was grateful to have someone step in when she needed help. "I am so proud that someone came through to save me. He's a wonderful example of what we want our youth to be."
Casal brushed off the attention, saying the recognition was not necessary.
"It was just the right thing to do," he said.
