Suspects sought in series of cellphone store robberies

NORCROSS -- Gwinnett County police have released surveillance footage of two men believed responsible for a string of armed robberies at Norcross-area cellphone stores, and are asking the public for help identifying the culprits.

A total of seven robberies -- six in unincorporated Norcross and one in unincorporated Lilburn -- are believed connected and date back to May 26. In each of the cases, one or two black males robbed the store at gunpoint, Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said. The crime usually takes only about two minutes, he said.

One suspect occurs in surveillance video from each store. He is described as a light-skinned black male about 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds, Smith said.

The most recent robbery occurred on the afternoon of July 24 at PD Wireless located at 6056 South Norcross-Tucker Road. According to an incident report, one of the men entered the store and began asking questions about phones.

Within a few moments, a second male came in and "produced a grey semi-automatic handgun and hopped up on the counter and started asking, 'Where's the money at?'" After money was produced, two store employees were forced into a rear bathroom while the men fled.

The actions in that robbery are typical of several others, Smith said.

"The suspect usually produces a handgun from his waistline and confronts employees," Smith said. "He usually orders the employees into a back bathroom or closet and orders them not to come out until a few minutes after he has left."

Other robberies have occurred at:

-- Metro PCS at 4864 Jimmy Carter Boulevard, on May 26

-- Sprint at 3292 Stone Mountain Highway, on June 2

-- Boost Mobile at 5200 Jimmy Carter Boulevard, on June 20

-- Metro PCS at 6780 Dawson Boulevard, on July 10

-- T-Mobile at 4771 Britt Road, on July 16

-- Metro PCS at 5345 Jimmy Carter Boulevard, on July 22

Anyone with information on the suspects or crime spree is asked to call Gwinnett County robbery detectives at 770-513-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 404-557-TIPS.
