Mill Creek senior Chris Powell, who swims for the Athens Bulldog Swim Club, led a number of top local finishers for Team Georgia at last week's Southern Zone Championships, which featured teams from 10 other states.
Powell, voted as captain by his teammates, won the 50-, 100- and 200-meter freestyle races, anchored first-place 200 and 400 medley relays and earned second and third place in two other relays. His times of 24.19 in the 50 free and 52.47 in the 100 free qualify him for U.S. Junior Nationals.
SwimAtlanta also had a group of top performers in the event. The local club's top finishers were Tyler Mazurek (second in 1,500 free, first in 400 free, eighth in 200 free), Taylor Delk (second in 200 backstroke, second in 100 backstroke), Devan Sweeney (sixth in 200 back, eighth in 200 individual medley), Erin Scott (second in 100 breaststroke, seventh in 200 breast), Joyce Kim (ninth in 50 back) and Brianna Bender (10th in 400 free).
