Mary Ellen Davis entered her heavenly home on July 28, 2012. Her Memorial Service will be held at Duluth First United Methodist Church on Monday, August 6th at 11:00 AM. Officiating will be Dr. Tommy Green and Rev. C. Kay Fuino. She was born on January 15, 1920 to Earle Fisher Bell and Zella Adeline Mays Bell in Knoxville, Tennessee. After completing her education, she moved to Atlanta and married Edwin L. Chesnutt, living at Grant Mansion – The Chesnutt’s family home. She was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and a friend to many. Mary Ellen exemplified God’s Grace. Her love and enthusiasm for life was uplifting. A visit with her was always joyful. She had unconditional love for all. She was gifted with many talents - playing the organ, gardening her roses, entertaining, marvelous cook, champion golfer and a great Atlanta Braves fan. During WWII, when her husband was away in Italy she worked as a Volunteer for the Red Cross and was employed as a credit manager at Zachery’s men clothing store in Atlanta. Volunteerism always remained an important part of her life whether it was Nursing Homes, Hospitals or Church. In 1952 she married Tom Davis and they moved to Charlotte and Beech Mountain, NC. She was an accomplished golfer. When Tom Davis died in Atlanta, she returned to the workforce and worked at the Indian Hills Country Club in Marietta, GA until she was 83 years old. In 2001 she relocated to Duluth, GA and joined the Duluth First United Methodist Church. Her strength was from the Lord and she encouraged others to commit themselves to His love, Forgiveness and Grace. Mary Ellen was predeceased in death by her two husbands Edwin Lee Chesnutt (awarded Bronze Star for Valor, WWII ) and Thomas Eason Davis (Major US Army Air Corps, WWII), beloved granddaughter Cynthia Ross Jordan, brothers Earl F., Bob and Alvin Bell and aunts Gladys, Ann and Gertrude Mays. Survivors include son Edwin L. Chesnutt, Jr. (Kay) of Greensboro, NC, daughter Judith Chesnutt Ross (Richard) of Atlanta, GA, grandsons Mark Edwin Ross (Heather) of Cumming, GA, Edwin L. Chesnutt, III of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Trescott W. Tisdale (Tracy) of Wilmington, NC, Alexander H. Tisdale (Beth) of Greensboro, NC and Son-in- law Richard Jordan of Atlanta, GA. Great grandchildren include Payton, Parker and Presley Ross of Cumming, GA, Brandon Vargas of Texas, Blair Jordan of Atlanta, GA, Boyd, Wright, Ansley, Reece and Fin Tisdale of North Carolina. Sister Frances B. Barker of Knoxville, TN, brothers Bill Bell (Marilyn) of Knoxville, TN, Watson Bell (Jeannie) of Arizona, other family Charlie & Sandra Pritchett of Johns Creek, GA, Sherron Doss of Atlanta, GA, Chuck Reiley of Black Mountain, NC, many nieces and nephews and special friend and caregiver Patricia Jones of Atlanta, GA.. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Ministry of Duluth First Methodist Church, Hwy 120, Duluth, GA and Hospice and Palliative Care of Duluth, GA. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and caregivers who attended Mary Ellen during her illness as well as very special friends.
