LONDON — The race that gave Michael Phelps his last Olympic medal also brought Parkview grad Eric Shanteau his first.
The Americans' highly favored 400-meter medley relay team won the gold medal Saturday in London, adding to Phelps' record haul of 22 medals, including 18 golds, in the Olympics. Lost in that celebration was the first-time medal of Shanteau, who got the medal because he swam the breaststroke portion of the relay in preliminaries.
It likely will be the last Olympics for Shanteau as well, but he leaves on a high note. While his individual events brought some disappointment — he failed to make the Olympics in his best event, the 200 breast, and didn't make Olympic finals in the 100 breast — the relay gold is a great way to finish the summer. The 400 medley was his first-ever participation in an Olympic relay.
Shanteau, who grew up training locally at SwimAtlanta, also was on the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, when he famously delayed cancer treatment to swim in the Games. He failed to medal his one event in 2008.
