Marley
Blu-ray (PG-13)
Movie: 3 and 1/2 out of 4 stars
Disc: 4 out of 4 stars
Blemished only by a slightly overlong running time because of too many already-seen live performances, this sweeping, epic film chronicling the life and influence of reggae pioneer Bob Marley is documentary filmmaking at its most thorough and entertaining. While covering Marley's mixed-race lineage, his political influence and wandering romantic eye, director Kevin MacDonald stays remarkably unbiased and presents Marley as he was, warts and all. With the possible exception of the Beatles, no musical act has had or ever will have a greater global impact than Marley and MacDonald lavishes his subject with all of the glory he rightfully deserves.
