Gwinnett Daily Post
LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Riverdale woman accused of running over a Gwinnett toddler last year has pleaded guilty, according to the victim family's attorneys.
According to a press release from Decatur-based law firm Wilson, Morton and Downs, representing the Hellwig family of Grayson, Tekila Glass pleaded guilty Friday to charges of second-degree vehicular homicide and failure to exercise due care.
She was sentenced to 30 days in jail and two years of probation, among other conditions, the law firm said.
On Sept. 18 of last year, Glass backed over 13-month-old Olivia Hellwig as she was attempting to park her SUV at Snellville's Lenora Park.
Olivia was struck while being pushed in a stroller by her mother, and was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston before succumbing to her injuries. Glass was arrested about two weeks after the incident.
The press release issued by Wilson, Morton and Downs included graphic details of the crash that led to Olivia Hellwig's death.
"After being knocked down from the (initial) impact, Brooke Hellwig got up and began running toward the rear of the SUV where baby Olivia had turned upside down in her stroller," it said. "But just as Mrs. Hellwig was a few feet from baby Olivia, Ms. Glass reversed her vehicle again."
The toddler was run over twice, according to the release.
In addition to jail time and probation, Glass will pay a $1,000 fine and complete 120 hours of community service and a defensive driving course.
The Hellwigs could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
