TIFTON -- Josh Brickell of Peachtree Ridge won the 1,600-meter run at Saturday's Class AAAAA East Sectional, but he finished second in the 3,200 behind Mill Creek's Eric Westog.
Westog ran 9 minutes, 36.51 seconds to beat Brickell, who swept the 1,600 and 3,200 state titles last year. Brickell ran 9:40.05 and also ran 4:21.52 to win the 1,600 on Saturday ahead of runner-up Morgan Malanoski of Brookwood (4:27.23).
Gwinnett had seven other boys champions in the sectional, which qualifies athletes for the upcoming state boys meet in Jefferson.
Mark Watts of South Gwinnett ran 49.25 to win the 400, while North Gwinnett's Andres Littig won the 800 in 1:57.15.
Collins Hill's Sam Davies won the 300 hurdles (39.07), Brookwood's Bilal Abdullah won the high jump (6 feet, 8 inches), Peachtree Ridge's Matthew Morris was first in the pole vault (15-2), North's Malcolm Jackson won the triple jump (46-10) and Mill Creek's Trevor Joyce was first in the shot put (50-7 ).
The following Gwinnett boys had runner-up finishes in the event: Brookwood's Jay Lawson (110 hurdles, 14.67), Peachtree Ridge's Darian Horn (300 hurdles, 39.57), North's John Paul Harley in the high jump (6-6), Brookwood's Justin Grose in the pole vault (14-0), Norcross' J.T. Tolbert in the triple jump (46-2 ) and Dacula's Alex Armah (shot put, 48-2 and discus, 157-8).
Yost wins two titles in AAAAA girls sectional
TIFTON -- Runner-up to Peachtree Ridge's Lauren Kelly in the Region 7-AAAAA meet, Norcross' Katherine Yost turned the tables at Saturday's Class AAAAA East Sectional.
Yost won the 1,600 title in 5:14.87, just ahead of Kelly's 5:15.86, and also placed first in the 3,200 in 11:40.41.
Peachtree Ridge's Autumn Burnette and Grayson's Jasmine Abrams also were double-winners on Saturday. Burnette won the 100 hurdles (14.15) and the 300 hurdles (42.61), and Abrams won the 100 (11.94) and 200 (24.07).
Gwinnett had three other girls champions in the event, including Aliyah Abrams in the 400 (54.43). She also was runner-up in the 200 (24.11). Mill Creek's Malayshia George won the high jump (5-8) and Dacula's Anna Machovec was first in the discus (125-8). George also was second in the 400 (55.17).
Local runner-up finishes came from: Brookwood's Simone Glenn (100, 12.11), Brookwood's QuanDra Shanks in the 800 (2:19.28), Berkmar's Elexis Guster in the 100 hurdles (43.40), Mountain View's Alexandria Johnson in the high jump (5-6), Mill Creek's Larsen Moore in the pole vault (9-0), Berkmar's Daijah Cooke in the triple jump (36-3 ), Peachtree Ridge's Stephanie Amichia in the shot put (39-8 ) and Archer's Alliyah Williams in the discus (118-6).
Berkmar's girls (400 relay, 48.14) and Grayson's girls (1,600 relay, 3:48.56) won relay championships.
Wesleyan wins four title in Class A sectional
FAIRBURN -- Wesleyan had four individual champions Saturday in the Class A West Sectional at Landmark Christian.
The girls team had two champions in Katie Frerking (high jump, 5-6) and India Welton (pole vault, 10-6).
The Wolves' boys event winners were Doug Mohme in the 800 (1:59.07) and Josh King in the shot put (46-7 ).
Wesleyan's second-place finishers were Landyn Duley (triple jump, 34-8 ), Holli Wilkins (shot put, 39-5 and discus, 117-5), Cole Warren (400, 50.27), Zander Yost (300 hurdles, 41.17) and Charles Mack (triple jump, 43-0 ).
Providence's Tayler Tuttle was second in the 1,600 (5:27.83).
