TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Gwinnett Braves broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the top of the fifth and beat the Toledo Mud Hens 8-3 in Game 2 of the four-game series on Saturday night at Fifth-Third Field.
The G-Braves opened the scoring early as Drew Sutton reached on a fielding error in the top of the first with two outs. Ernesto Mejia followed with a two-run homer to left, his third blast of the season, to open up a 2-0 lead.
Gwinnett added a run in the top of the second as Jose Yepez singled to left scoring Joey Terdoslavich from second. Terdoslavich had led off the inning with a single to center and moved to second on a single by Josh Wilson.
G-Braves' starting pitcher Todd Redmond would give up one run in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the third as the Mud Hens tied the game at three. Redmond then would settle down and retire 11 in a row before being lifted after six innings.
The big four-run fifth inning for the Braves started with a lead-off single to right by Jose Constanza. He moved to second on a throwing error and Luis Durango walked to put two on with no one out. Stefan Gartrell followed with a one-out double off the wall in left scoring both Constanza and Durango, giving Gwinnett a 5-3 lead. Toledo pulled starting pitcher Shawn Teufel in favor of right-handed reliever Brooks Brown. Brown then gave up a two run shot to Terdoslavich, the first batter the former University of Georgia pitcher faced. Terdoslavich's third homer of the year put the Braves up 7-3
Gwinnett tacked on another run in the top of the sixth as Yepez scored from third on a double-play ball hit by Constanza.
Redmond worked six innings, giving up three runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out seven. Right-hander Erik Cordier, making his first relief appearance of the season, pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings with no hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Right-hander Jason Rice recorded the three outs of a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit.
Teufel worked 4 innings with seven hits, six runs -- four earned -- three walks, one strikeout. Brown went 2 innings with one hit, two runs, one earned run, three walks and three strikeouts. Right-hander Zach Miner pitched the final two innings for Toledo with one walk and one strikeout.
At the plate, both Mejia and Terdoslavich went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. Gartrell's fifth inning, 2-RBI double, was his only hit in four trips. Constanza, Wilson and Yepez each had one hit. Sutton scored twice.
The Mud Hens were led by first baseman Rawley Bishop, who was 2-for-4 in only his second-ever Triple-A game.
Jair Jurrjens gets his first Class AAA start since the Braves optioned the 2011 All-Star selection to the G-Braves in today's 2 p.m. game at Toledo.
