LAWRENCEVILLE -- A woman leapt from her car Wednesday just before it struck a telephone pole and caught on fire, knocking out power service to portions of Lawrenceville, officials said.
Gwinnett County fire department spokesman Lt. Eric Eberly said the 27-year-old woman jumped from her vehicle before it hit the pole on the 700 block of Ga. Highway 20, near Simonton Road in Lawrenceville. The pole broke off at the base and landed on the car, catching it on fire.
The woman was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, but her injuries were believed to be minor, Eberly said.
Traffic was gummed up on the highway just a mile or so outside downtown Lawrenceville, and power service was lost to the immediate area for several hours. Eberly said it would be as late as 11 p.m. before power was restored.
No cause of the incident was immediately released. The driver was not identified Wednesday.
