LAWRENCEVILLE -- Another stretch of road in Gwinnett will be timed and monitored, with a move approved by commissioners last week.

The $677,377 contract with Midasco LLC calls for installing fiber-optic cables along nearly seven miles of Ga. Highway 124 from U.S. Highway 78 to the DeKalb County line. Using the cables and nine new traffic monitoring cameras, Gwinnett staffers at the county's traffic control center can monitor traffic and make real-time adjustments to traffic signals based on conditions.

And drivers can also monitor the roads, watching live traffic feeds available 24 hours a day at www.gcsmartcommute.com. Along with other roadways monitored at the traffic control center, the camera feeds will rotate on the government access cable channel TVGwinnett, during rush hour. The hours for the television programming are 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.

Also last week, commissioners approved work that will connect Archer High School, for students who walk to school.

The $769,361 contract with ISC Inc. includes a new sidewalk, curb and gutter and drainage improvements for a third of a mile on the north side of New Hope Road from the high school to Tribble Walk Drive. The work is scheduled to be complete by the beginning of the new school year in August.
