PEACHTREE CORNERS -- Now that Peachtree Corners has become the newest city in Gwinnett Country, then voted and elected its City Council members and Mayor Mike Mason, it's time to throw a little party to celebrate.
And who knows how to throw a party? The Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Street Food Coalition. On Saturday, the two are teaming up for a block party blast with 14 food trucks, Dominique Wilkins, Jerry Stackhouse, the Hawks cheerleaders and faithful mascot Harry.
"Peachtree Corners is the newest city in Gwinnett County," said Ailey Penningroth, vice president of brand strategy for the Hawks and Philips Arena. "We learned it is the biggest (city) now. When we talked to them, they were really into celebrating being a new city. They loved the fact that they wanted to be there with them."
The food truck vendors were just as excited to be invited to the soiree.
"It's an area that we haven't be in at all. We were excited that they chose to come to Gwinnett," said Greg Smith, president of the Atlanta Street Food Coalition. "Some folks are kind of scared of (food trucks) and don't know what to expect. The exciting thing to me about food trucks is that the folks that own or operate the trucks -- they have one or two things that they're really good at. I'm excited for people to see the creativity that comes through with the trucks."
The Hawks have recently developed relationships with the food trucks and thought they'd be a great fit for the Peachtree Corners event.
"The food truck are a hidden gem in downtown. It was kind of cool to bring all of that downtown activity to the suburbs," Penningroth said. "Each of the trucks is going to make a Hawks themed item for the day. We're curious to see what they come up."
The food trucks participating include Munch, Tamale Queen, Banged Up & Mashed, Yoli's, Champion Cheesteaks, Pressed for Time, Hail Caesar, King of Pops, Yum Yum Cupcakes, Yumbii, Rolling Reuben, Nana G's Chicken and Waffles, The Pup Truck and Buen Provecho.
In addition, the Atlanta Hawks will bring out a full basketball court, inflatables, games and giveaways,
The party is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chick-fil-A at the intersection of Corners Parkway and Woodhill Drive.
