SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- Officials say hundreds of job seekers poured into the Savannah Civic Center in search of work during a job fair.
The Savannah Morning News reports that 1,597 people showed up for Tuesday's event hoping to find work with the city.
The city had 22 open positions, including assistant chief of police and undergraduate intern.
The city's job fair put the region's unemployment problem on full display, along with the desperation and frustration of the jobless and the under-employed.
The Department of Labor reports that unemployment for Chatham, Bryan and Effingham counties is around 8 percent.
Mayor Edna Jackson said "there's a terrible need for jobs in this city." Jackson said if officials hold another job fair, they may need to do it in the arena to accommodate the crowds.
