LAWRENCEVILLE -- An equestrian event at Gwinnett County Fairgrounds on Friday and Saturday offers horseback riding for people with physical disabilities. The event, McKeever's First Ride, also features opportunities to pet horses and take part in other equestrian-themed activities.
Organizers are seeking volunteers for the free event, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Activities featured at McKeever's First Ride include therapeutic horseback riding, which allows people to ride a horse at walking speed around the arena. Horses will be led alongside the riders.
Chastain Horse Park will bring a variety of assistive devices to help participants mount the horses.
The horse grooming event allows participants to touch a horse and learn how to care for the animals' coat, mane, tail and hooves.
Participants at McKeever's First Ride don't have to ride a horse to attend. There are other activities as well like arts and crafts and roping skills games.
Volunteers should arrive and check in at 8:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies start at 10:30 a.m. with a flag ceremony and an equestrian drill team performance.
Those who wish to volunteer can call Jennifer Lee at 706-351-3763 or email email@example.com.
Gwinnett County Fairgrounds is located at 2405 Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville.
