Official: Woman tried to ignite apartment near Mall of Georgia

BUFORD -- Authorities arrested a Buford woman Thursday on charges she tried to set fire to her apartment in a complex near the Mall of Georgia that's home to numerous families.

Darling Perez, 39, was booked Thursday morning on charges she intentionally set fire to furniture in her unit during a domestic situation at The Estates at Mill Creek apartments in the 2700 block of Mall of Georgia Boulevard.

The fire caused minor damage to the unit and had burned itself out by the time fire crews arrived, said Fire Department spokesman Lt. Eric Eberly.

None of the building's other occupants were affected, and no injuries were reported. Perez gave no indication why she tried to set the fire, Eberly said.

"There are so many other families that live within that building, we're very lucky we got there when we did," said Eberly.

Gwinnett police and fire personnel responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the complex about 8:30 a.m. Eberly said fire personnel noticed then that Perez had attempted to catch the unit on fire.

Gwinnett police arrested Perez on felony criminal damage to property charges. Fire investigators filed an additional charge of first-degree arson, a felony that Eberly said carries a penalty between one and 20 years in prison.

I wonder if the officials will also make her pay for the damages she caused? This is the risk you take living in certain area complexes.
