Easily the most underrated of all living filmmakers, German director Werner Herzog delivered the two of the best documentaries of 2011 that couldn't have been more different. "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" is a history buff's delight and is one of the few films to correctly employ the 3-D format. "Into the Abyss" is the chilling story of a triple homicide that took place in Texas and interviews with the murderers and families of their victims. Devoid of petty sensationalism or manipulative emotional hooks, the film provides arguments slightly for but mostly against capital punishment and, in an even more chilling way, makes for a superb companion piece to "In Cold Blood." It's too bad the disc comes with essentially no extras.
