PREP ROUNDUP: Sanchez delivers as Lions beat Norcross in 7-AAAAA baseball

SUWANEE — Robert Sanchez had a game-tying sacrifice fly in the fifth and added a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to lift Peachtree Ridge past Norcross 2-1 in a Region 7-AAAAA baseball thriller Monday at home.

Sanchez chased home Steven Tomlinson, who had a one-out double in the seventh, with the winning run to back a complete-game performance from Tyler Haswell (3-2), who scattered six hits and one earned run with five strikeouts over seven innings.

Cole Rives and Jonathan Hudson also had a double apiece for the Lions (12-7, 7-4).

The Blue Devils fell to 7-11 overall and 3-8 in region despite a complete-game from Jackson Williams (1-4), who gave up just four hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.


Mountain View 6, Collins Hill 5

LAWRENCEVILLE — Ben Utley had two hits, including a two-out, two run single in the bottom of the seventh to deliver the first walk-off win in Mountain View baseball history, a 6-5 win over Region 7-AAAAA foe Collins Hill on Monday at home.

Utley’s hit capped a three-run rally for the seventh-ranked Bears (12-6, 5-6) and made a winner out of A.J. Moore (4-1), who threw 1 2/3 shutout innings out of bullpen with three strikeouts.

Tyler Bethune also had two hits and drove in three runs for Mountain View, while Brandon Griffin and Peyton Fore each had a hit and scored two runs and Beau Blair and Alex Dedels added a hit apiece.

Brookwood 21, Central Gwinnett 6, 5 innings

SNELLVILLE — The No. 10 state-ranked Broncos answered Central’s three-run top of the first with 13 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning en route to a 21-6 romp in Region 8-AAAAA play Monday at the Dave Hunter Sports Complex.

Michael Gouge went 2-for-4 and drove in six runs, while Garrett Reynolds and Zach Moon each went 3-for-3, with Moon driving in four runs and Reynolds adding an RBI, as Brookwood (10-6, 6-2) pounded out 19 hits on the day.

Cedric Mullins was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Ryan Woodard went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Jordan Dykes was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Patrick Riley (1-0) got the win by scattering five hits and thre runs with five strikeouts over three innings.

Grayson 14, South Gwinnett 0, 5 innings

SNELLVILLE — Taylor Allum went 3-for-4 with two RBIs at the plate and threw three shutout innings was No. 5 Grayson rolled to a 14-0 win over Region 8-AAAAA foe South on Monday at John B. Sawyer Field.

Allum (5-0) gave up just two hits and struck out two for the Rams (14-4, 8-1), while Jeril Dawson went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Austin Meadows was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Parkview 14, Dacula 2

DACULA — Matt Olson threw three solid innings and blasted a two-run home run as top-ranked Parkview rolled to a 14-2 win at Dacula in Region 8-AAAAA play Monday.

Olson (6-0) gave up three hits and an earned run with four strikeouts in three innings before giving way to Jack Esmonde, who gave up just three hits and and an earned run with five strikeouts over the final four innings to pick up his third save of the season.

Josh Hart and Edwin Arias each went 3-for-5 to lead the Panthers’ (14-3, 8-0) offense, with Arias driving in three runs, while Jeff Ronpirin was 2-for-4 with a solo homer, Jarrett Freeland was 2-for-3 and Rob Youngblood chipped in a three-run homer.

Brandyn Bartlett took the loss for Dacula (4-15, 3-6), giving up four hits and five runs with a strikeout in two innings. Bartlett also went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Tyler Crumley, Michael Barnes and Austin Collins each added a hit for the Falcons.

Archer 18, Berkmar 0, 5 innings

LILBURN — Hayden Pendergraft went the distance, while Tyler Hooper was 2-for-2 with three RBIs as the Tigers (9-9, 4-5) got the Region 8-AAAAA road win with an 18-0 rout of the Patriots on Monday.

Pendergraft (2-0) gave up just one hit and struck out four in five innings and got offensive support from Hooper and Jeremy MItchell, who was 1-for-1 with two RBIs.

GAC 14, Maynard Jackson 1

NORCROSS — Carter Willyerd (1-0) gave up just four hits and an earned run and struck out 10 in his first varsity start as the Spartans pounded the visiting Lasers 14-1 in Region 6-AA action Monday at home.

Daino Deas hit a pair of triples and drove in two runs, while Devin Daugherty added a two-run homer to pace the GAC (12-7, 5-3) offense.

Wesleyan 8, Fellowship Christian 4

ROSWELL — Jamie Stark (3-2) scattered six hits and four runs with four strikeouts in a complete-game effort as the Wolves upset the seventh-ranked Paladins for a Region 5-A road win Monday.

Carter Hall was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, while Griffin Bone also went 2-for-4 and Mason Colquitt chipped in a double for Wesleyan (9-8, 5-4).

Lanier 14, Monroe Area 3

SUGAR HILL — T.J. Richardson led four different players with at least two hits as the Longhorns posted 15 hits total in bombing the Purple Hurricanes 14-3 at home Monday.

Richardson went 2-for-3, with a triple and two RBIs, while Taylor Gant, was 2-for-2 with a double, Anthony Mauricio went 2-for-3 with a double and a solo homer and Austin Gaskins went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI as Lanier improved to 10-7 overall and 8-5 in Region 8-AAA.

Stephen Rusch added a double and drove in three runs RBIs to help back the complete-game mound effort by Trent Little, who gave up just two earned runs and struck out four.

Buford 13, Decatur 0, 5 innings

BUFORD — Troy Herterick (5-0) threw four shutout innings, giving up just two hits and striking out three, as the Wolves remained atop the Region 6-AA standings with an easy 13-0 win Monday at home.

Ryan Bramlett added a shutout inning with two strikeouts, while Mikey Bart (1-for-1, two walks, three RBIs), Shawn Reynolds (1-for-2, two RBIs), Kyler Berrett (1-for-1, two RBIs) and Josh Bryan (2-for-2, RBI) all had a big day at the plate for Buford (11-8, 8-0).

Killian Hill Christian 5, Nathaniel Greene Academy 4

LILBURN — Samuel Winston’s walk-off RBI single scored Esai Harmon, who had doubled, as Killian Hill edged Nathaniel Greene Academy 5-4 Monday at home.

Adam Maelend got the win with a scoreless inning with a strikeout in relief of Alex Attebery, who had given up just four hits and two earned runs with nine strikeouts over six innings and driven in two runs at the plate for Jim Bailey’s Killian Hill (6-3) team over a Nathaniel Greene team coached by his son, Allan Bailey.

SOCIAL CIRCLE — Darby Gentry fired a 1-over par 37 and Reese Brooks added a 40 as the Lions breezed past Social Circle 77-94 on Monday at Hard Labor Creek Golf Course.

Peachtree Ridge 93, South Forsyth 132

DULUTH — Jenny Li’s 43 helped the Lions down the War Eagles 93-132 in a dual match Monday at TPC at Sugarloaf.

Sydney Hickman shot a 50 for Peachtree Ridge.

Archer 94, Buford 95

BRASELTON — Morganne Gregory carded a 45 to help the Tigers to a one-stroke victory over Buford on Monday at Chateau Elan.

Aly Hicks shot the Wolves’ low round of the day with a 46.

SOCIAL CIRCLE — Paced by low medalist Casey Price’s 40, the Lions defeated Social Circle 186-197 Monday at Hard Labor Creek Golf Course.

Buford 184, Archer 195

BRASELTON — Logan Nance and Austin Moeller each shot 45 as the Wolves defeated Archer 184-195 in a dual match Monday at Chateau Elan.

Norman Cobb’s 44 led the Tigers.


Brookwood 5, Starr’s Mill 0

PEACHTREE CITY — Mark Guentert, Will George and Drew Wendel swept through the singles matches at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 respectively as the Broncos, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class AAAAA, posted an impressive shutout of the Panthers, who are ranked No. 2 in Class AAAA, Monday at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.

The No. 1 doubles team of David Brown and Matt Jones also won, while Christian Gochnauer and Will McWhirt won at No. 2 doubles for Brookwood, which heads into the first round of the Region 8-AAAAA tournament today at Rhodes Jordan Park at a perfect 18-0 on the season.

Lanier 5, Jackson Co. 0

SUGAR HILL — Paced by doubles wins from Kevin Wagner and Kyle Galloway at No. 1 and Armin Zmajavac and Sal Rocha at No. 2, the Longhorns swept visiting Jackson County 5-0 on Monday.

Hendhi Agenor also won at No. 1 singles, while No. 2 singles Gem Veng and No. 3 singles Cullen Moss also won for Lanier (10-6).


Lanier 4, Jackson Co. 1

SUGAR HILL — Singles wins from Lauren Byrd at No. 1, Meg McRee at No. 2 and Jenna Soucia at No. 3 helped the Longhorns (12-4) to a 4-1 Senior Night win over visiting Jackson County on Monday.

The No. 1 doubles team of Victoria Inman and senior Nivein Gobran also won for Lanier, while seniors Jessica Lindley and Dianne Meuse fell despite a spirited effort at No. 2 doubles.
