Firefighters respond to an overturned tanker truck on U.S. Highway 29 north of Ga. Highway 316 near Dacula on Monday.
DACULA — Authorities say a tanker truck overturned in Dacula, spilling thousands of gallons of gasoline into a creek.
The incident happened on U.S. Highway 29 north of Ga. Highway 316 on Monday afternoon, officials said.
U.S. 29 was closed from Circle Road to Ga. 316 for more than 10 hours. It reopened at about 10:30 p.m. Monday, Gwinnett County fire department spokesman Lt. Eric Eberly said.
Eberly said there were 8,500 gallons of fuel in the truck. Approximately 1,000 gallons were recovered from the tanker, but 2,000 more spilled into a nearby creek, Eberly said.
“We have built several dams ... to help catch some of the spill off,” he said in a news release.
The Gwinnett County Fire Department hazardous materials unit was released late Monday evening, but teams from the Environmental Protection Agency and a private cleaning company were expected to be on scene "all night."
Eberly also said the Georgia Department of Transportation will be at the scene on Tuesday morning to repair a portion of the roadway.
The incident was caused by a passenger car that crossed the center line, Eberly said.
Cpl. Jake Smith of the Gwinnett County Police Department said a witness pulled the driver of the truck out of the vehicle.
Two people were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville with non-life threatening injuries.
