SUWANEE -- Event season is in full swing in Suwanee, and the first concert of the year at Town Center Park will feature bands that play hits from the golden oldies era.
The fourth birthday celebration of Atlanta radio station 106.7 FM will begin at noon April 14. The Atlanta's Greatest Hits event will feature festival food, vendor booths, giveaways, and an area especially for children with inflatable bouncy houses, games and prizes. Admission is free.
Lawn chairs, blankets and picnics are encouraged by event organizers, but alcohol is only allowed from Town Center restaurants.
The headline band, Yacht Rock Revue, plays hits by artists like Boz Scaggs, Jackson Browne, Kenny Loggins, the Bee Gees, Rupert Holmes, the Doobie Brothers, and Hall and Oates.
"It's pretty amazing to watch kids in their 20s still jamming to a Michael McDonald song," said Mike Kee, event manager at radio station 99X, which is part of the Cumulus Media family with 106.7.
Kee said Yacht Rock Revue gained in popularity when they played at the 10 High Club in Virginia Highlands. The band then played at wedding receptions, and its name became well-known up the East Coast.
"If you came of age anywhere from the mid-'70s to the mid-'80s, this is your music," Bill Barnes, Suwanee's assistant to the public works director, said in a press release. "I love the energy and the attitude of this band."
The opening band is Yacht Rock Schooner, a "fast, light, backwards version of Yacht Rock Revue." Yacht Rock Schooner will play at 3:30 p.m., and Yacht Rock Revue will begin at 5:30 p.m.
A free shuttle service will begin at 3:30 p.m. between Town Center and off-site parking at Shawnee North Business Complex.
