LAWRENCEVILLE -- The local camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will participate in a pair of memorial services in the coming weeks.
The Lawrenceville-based Maj. William E. Simmons Camp 96 will hold its annual Confederate Memorial Day service at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The event will be held at the Gwinnett County Historic Courthouse in downtown Lawrenceville.
The following weekend, the local group will participate in the 11th National Confederate Memorial Service at Stone Mountain Park, "in front of the world's largest Confederate memorial carving." That service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 14.
The keynote speaker will be R. Michael Givens, the national commander-in-chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The public is invited to attend both events. For more information, visit www.scv96.org or contact Adjutant David Floyd at 770-979-2637.
Camp 96 is named after Maj. William E. Simmons, whom leaders described as "a very prominent citizen of Gwinnett County from 1870 to 1931." He served as a trustee at both the University of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
