Gwinnett Gladiators goaltender Jeff Jakaitis was named the ECHL Goaltender of the Year on Thursday, despite missing the last two months of the season with a knee injury.
Jakaitis is the first Gladiators goaltender in team history to win the award. He had a 17-6-2 record at the time of his injury, suffered in a collision with Greenville's Brandon Wong on Feb. 4. Jakaitis set a new franchise record with five shutouts in a season. He finished the season tied for the league's best save percentage (.930) and was second with a goals-against average of 2.03.
The Rochester, Minn., native was twice named the ECHL Goaltender of the Week (Dec. 12-18 and Dec. 26-Jan. 1) and was December's ECHL Goaltender of the Month. Jakaitis was also named to the All-ECHL first team a week ago.
