Apalachee Wildcats (8-AAAA)
Coach: Shane Davis
Record: 0-4, 0-4 region
Last week: Lost to Heritage 22-17
The Wildcats haven't had any problem competing this season, with three of their four losses coming by a combined 15 points, and playing state-ranked Flowery Branch closer than any other opponent thus far.
But that's not good enough for the players or for head coach Shane Davis, who are are all hungry for a breakout win Friday against Madison County.
"We've fought hard, but at the end of the day, the results have been the same," Davis said. "We're past the point of moral victories."
Davis has a good idea of what has to change for Apalachee to get its breakout win.
The Wildcats have been able to roll up yardage behind its four-headed ground attack, led by Eric Tanner (263 yards) and Stanley Williams (255 yards, 5 TDs), but mistakes have proved costly.
"We've just got to stop turning the ball over," Davis said. "In at least three of our losses, we've turned the ball over in our own territory -- inside our own 30. We just can't do that.
"If we can stop making mistakes in areas we can control. At critical times of the game, we're not capitalizing on things (opportunities) that are there."
Cashing in on any and all opportunities will be important for the Wildcats to avoid leaving the door open for the Red Raiders and their workhorse quarterback Trae Burton.
