Norcross man booked in machete attack

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Sheriff's Department deputies arrested a Norcross man this week on charges he broke into an apartment and attacked another man with a machete.

Deputies arrested Joey Harrison Shelby, 40, on Tuesday at a loading dock at his place of employment, a warehouse on Breckinridge Boulevard, said Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais.

According to reports, Shelby kicked in a door at the victim's apartment on Hampton Crossing in Norcross on Sept. 17, threatened to kill the man and attempted to strike him with the weapon.

"The man was able to fight his way out of the apartment and get free from (Shelby)," Bourbonnais said.

Shelby was taken into custody by Sheriff's deputies without incident and is charged with aggravated assault, burglary, battery and criminal damage to property second degree. No serious injuries were reported.

Bourbonnais said the men had reportedly seen each other at the apartment complex before. A motive was not released.
