North cruises to victory over Meadowcreek

SUWANEE -- North Gwinnett cruised to a 71-6 victory over Meadowcreek in Region 7-AAAAA action Friday night and Bulldogs coach Bob Sphire was in a complimentary mood after the game.

"It's a tough deal (for Meadowcreek) and I want everyone to know their kids played hard and had a good attitude," Sphire said. "As for us, every person who we sent in, from the starters to the freshman were focused and ready to play."

North opened the scoring with 8:10 left in the opening quarter when quarterback Scott Hosch scrambled to his left and back to his right and found Joe Jones for the touchdown from seven yards out. The PAT from Alex Arroyave was the opening of the flood gates on the evening.

North extended its lead to 14-0 when Hosch connected with Chad Scott, just inside the pylon in the left flat for the touchdown. Hosch was 9-for-17 on the night in a half of playing time for 115 yards.

The Mustangs (0-5,0-2) were unable to move the ball on its next possession and North recorded a safety when the shotgun snap went into the end zone and was fumbled out the back of it to increase the lead to 16-0.

In the second quarter, junior Donnie Miles broke off a 46-yard run that saw him start and end in the center of the field with a detour to the left sideline and then break four tackles over the final 15 yards for the score. Arroyave was true on his kick and with 8:49 until halftime the lead stood at 23-0.

Hosch connected on his third touchdown of the night with 6:26 remaining in the quarter when he spotted Darrion Lovelace open in the right flat and the senior scored from 14 yards. Arroyave converted the PAT on both this touchdown and the one by reserve quarterback Michael Haynes, who scored from 24 yards out with 41 seconds left until halftime. The lead was 37-0 at intermission.

The second half was a parade of new faces and youth as the Bulldogs (4-1,2-0) subsituted early and often. Defensive lineman Joshua Manners recovered a fumble in the end zone to increase the North lead to 44-0. Haynes scored his second touchdown of the game as did Lovelace in the second half. Robert Puccarello scored in his turn at quarterback for North and Michael D'Angola converted the extra points of the final two Bulldog touchdowns.

Meadowcreek fans cheered (as did the North fans) when Keyon Rich returned a Kickoff 90 yards for a Mustang touchdown. Rich had returned one for a score earlier in the game only to have it negated by a holding call. North's final score came when Jonathan Lewis scored from 15 yards out in the final minute.
