Gwinnett students make 'Pinwheels for Peace'

DACULA -- Puckett's Mill Elementary was one of many elementary schools in Gwinnett County and around the world that celebrated International Peace Day on Wednesday.

Students used their creativity to make pinwheels and decorate them, designing each with a unique touch that "exemplified peace to them," said Puckett's Mill teacher Beau Pezoldt.

More than 1,100 students held their pinwheels in the air while singing "Heal the World" in unison.

Said teacher Joyce Dorian: "The idea is that each child is able to express through art their feelings about peace on every pinwheel."

Dorian said it also ties in with the school's anti-bullying push.

In addition, principal Michelle Farmer read a story about peace to each grade level.

According to the website, more than 3.5 million pinwheels were "spinning for peace" on Wednesday.

I appreciate the concept, but my daughters go to Puckets Mill and I would rather have had them working on math, writing, science or spelling. This week now the kids have 3 days of testing taking them out of class. This was parts of several days of for pinwheels for peace. They brought in artists to talk about peace. So when you ask why kids can't have PE every day, science is a "special" you know why. One more note, the kids don't get veterans day off anymore and don't even recognize it in class, but several days of pinwheels for peace. Yes I did express my concerns to the principal.

Well, aren't you proud of making that new principal's day. But your opinion is yours. Not of others.

Note to huskypals - are you sure you appreciate the concept? Doesn't sound like it. Kids and adults need space between work, studying and tests. What a great idea to give them a creative lesson on peace during a stressful time! PE can be provided in the home every single day by a willing parent. Same for prayer. And guess what else? Many veterans don't get Veteran's Day off either. I plan to express my heartfelt thanks to the principal and the art teacher.

I am so proud of our school for doing this. I also hope that our school will support all purple day on October 20th. Between pinwheels for peace and October 20th we can show we are a school against bullies!
