LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department is warning residents about a scam falsely claiming its victims have won the lottery.
Spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais said Friday that a Snellville couple recently received a phone call at home "advising them that they won the Mega Millions" lottery. After the couple questioned the caller, the caller changed the story and said they had actually won a sweepstakes, Bourbonnais said. "The caller wanted to set up an appointment to come to the couple's home and bring two attorneys," Bourbonnais said, "telling them they would accompany them to their bank to deposit a cashier's check." The couple alerted the sheriff's department, but the caller never showed up at the residence. Officials urge any other residents that may have been the victim of a similar scam to contact their local law enforcement agency.More like this story
