BREAKDOWN: Peachtree Ridge at Meadowcreek

Peachtree Ridge Lions (7-AAAAA)

Coach: Mark Fleetwood

Record: 2-1

Last week: Beat Newnan 28-16

Meadowcreek Mustangs (7-AAAAA)

Coach: Deario Grimmage

Record: 0-3

Last week: Lost to Wheeler 26-0

Two teams moving in vastly different directions square off for their region opener Friday at Meadowcreek Community Stadium.

A very young Mustangs team continues to try to establish itself, a task that remains a difficult one after an 0-3 start, including last week's loss to Wheeler.

"The main thing for us is to focus as much as we can on the fundamentals of football," Grimmage said. "This past week, we didn't have as many turnovers. We had some, but we eliminated a lot of those from Game 1 to Game 2. We're continuing to focus on little things like that."

By contrast, the Lions are much more experienced and riding a much stronger wave of momentum after closing out their non-region schedule with a win at home over a solid Newnan team last week.

And they will try to take advantage of that experience by putting pressure on Meadowcreek.

That is particularly the case on defense, where an already strong linebacker corps -- led by Darian Pogman -- has gotten even deeper with the return Myles Jack from injury and the shifting of Harry Obiorah from running back.

And the Lions will try to use that strength to apply pressure to young Mustang quarterbacks Ridwan Issahaku, a sophomore, and Patrick Mills, a freshman.

"They're an athletic team," Fleetwood said of Meadowcreek. "We'll just stick to what we do. ... We've got to make sure we play assignment football and put some pressure on some of their younger players."

Last meeting: Peachtree Ridge won 57-0 last year
