BUFORD -- A 35-year-old motorcyclist killed on Interstate 85 during evening rush hour Wednesday was run over by a tractor-trailer driver who couldn't avoid him, police said.
Gwinnett police identified the victim Thursday morning as Lonnie Cross, of Hoschton. He died after the 5:30 p.m. crash at Gwinnett Medical Center, police said.
Cross was northbound in the left lane at the I-985 split when he struck a tire tread that had become airborne after being hit by another vehicle, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter.
Cross lost control of the motorcycle, became separated from it and came to rest in the path of a tractor-trailer in the center lane, Ritter said.
"The driver was unable to avoid (Cross) and ran over him," Ritter said.
The incident shut down all northbound I-85 lanes for an investigation as traffic was diverted to I-985.
Ritter said no charges are pending in the ongoing investigation.
