WINDER Matt Whiting was named Winder's new fire chief Tuesday evening, filling the shoes of former chief Ray Mattison who retired June 30. Whiting, who began his service with the winder Fire Department as a part time firefighter in July 1992, became a fulltime firefighter in February 1992 and was promoted to captain in December 1999.
Mayor Chip Thompson presented Whiting with his new badge during Tuesday's city council meeting, and Whiting's wife and two sons were on hand to witness the presentation.
Bids to be solicited for city solid waste disposal
Winder's five-year contract for solid waste disposal expires in February, and the city has the choice to either extend that contract with Republic Services or issue a Request for Proposals from other providers. Tuesday evening, city council members voted to solicit bids from other solid waste disposal contractors.
City leaders choose to seek grant assistance for several LCI projects
Council members voted to submit five LCI projects for grant consideration. Grants may be considered for all or none of the projects, but the priority list includes:
Realignment of North Jackson Street where it crosses Midland Avenue
Crosswalk striping throughout LCI study area
Cultural Loop sidewalk project
Making all crossings along May Street from Horton Street East to Williams Street handicapped- accessible
Multi-use trail connecting Sweet Gum Lane cul-de-sac to Holly Hill Mall area
